Illustration in Derby

Martin Hyde is the course leader/lecturer on an evening class I have been attending at The Quad in Derby. He has recently finished a masters in Art (MA) at the University of Derby and has succesfully been running a graphic design consultancy called design&i within Derby. Above are some characters he has created named, Edward and Vincent, in his 'Dead Good Kids' series which being delevoped into a childrens TV series called 'We Come In Peace'.

I along with 5 others on the course have been learning the basic in Character Illustration, using Adobe Illustrator a vector based package that works well along side the well know Photoshop. Im hoping I can then create or doctor images to create even better flyer for Filthy Boots and maybe even get some other graphic design work, for friends etc.

With this local talent on show I have decided to put a track up today that will allow you to see some nationwide talent in a local environment. Calvin Harris is playing The Royal in Derby just next week, on Thursday June 9th. I will be playing in between support acts in the lead up to Calvin himself, I cant bloody wait!!!

Heres a track remixed by northern lad Doorly, who has been playing alot on the dubstep and party scene in the UK and over in Ibiza. In glorious 320 kbps his brand of jump up dubstep is a winner...

Calvin Harris - Not Alone (Doorly Remix)

A little bonus here for you, straight up party music for your enjoyment! This had been canned recently by the likes of Diplo and A Trak and this is serious late night ammo, the crescendo is mad!

Enjoy them!!!

The Gap....

This weekend has been busy with gigs for the Bridge The Gap night I play at run by a good freind fo mine Chris Millward. The first was at The Sunlounge in Derby, which is usually held in the courtyard area, but Matt Capone, a good local house DJ who holds the residency there, allowed Chris a room upstairs. The set up looked fantastic and I think its a great space but the hot sweaty weather meant everyone stayed outside in the packed courtyard, listening to the funky house anthems. The second event held today (Sunday) at the home of Chriss' night The Bridge, Dig Street, Ashbourne, was a different affair. The tracks played were move laid back as the sun shone down on the outside terrace. It was relatively busy for a Sunday event with around 70-80 people there when I left and some good techy house from Patrick Cresswell.

The tunes I have lined up for you this weekend have both been played out by me...

Stimming - The Kiss (Ripperton Remix)

The first an edgy tech house affair from rising talent Martin Stimming who has been delivering some of the greatest funk fuelled tech house for a while. Stand out tracks include, FunkWorm and After8, but this one of his latest releases, has had a rerub by Ripperton.

Catch Stimming if your lucky enough to be either in Paris or at DanceValley!

26 Jun 2009 20:00
Fusion Festival Neustrelitz
9 Jul 2009 20:00

11 Jul 2009 20:00

The second track of the weekend is on a totally different tip...

Jake Island - What If You Wanted More (Grum Remix)

I know I have posted a Grum Remix on here before but this kid is on fire! I dropped 2 of his latest tracks, wether remix or original, this weekend and they went down well indeed! I really like the synth on this track its got a really indie vibe. I really hope that we can get him down at Filthy Boots before Christmas, as I see '10 being bust for this talented Northerner!

Wolfgang

Wolfgang is a name synonymous with music, the famous compser Wolfang Amedueas Motzart. A name with it origins in Europe, it conjours up images of rolling forest ridden hills with pointy Germanic castle on the horizon. What also springs to mind is a man who is very pale, with a mole on his face and an almost parlimentry wig...exactly the opposite to Wolfgang Gartner.

With his origin firmly rooted to the North of America, in Austin, Texas, this techno/electro producer who has emerged over the past 12 months is putting out some belting tracks on his Kindergraten label. I have chosen him as my featured artist this week as he seems to conform to electro producers before him yet adds a new more techy edge. The track that showcases this perfectly is:

Wolfgang Gartner - Flashback (320kbps)

With it escilatting synth and basic drum beat it lures you in, in a club, crescendoing into a funky little drum nugget, then wow it hits you. The bass hook and synth layered on top of one another and a repetitive vocal make this a prime time dance floor bomb! I know it may be a few months old but what a tune! (for other releases Wolfgang on Beatport)

Wolfgang has been knocking on the door of greatness for just over 15 years now starting production at the age of just 11. If it takes me as long to create such great music then expect somethings when im 36 or in 2024...

Being based in North America the majority of his gigs are over there, but there is on gig of his soon in Ibiza. If you are lucky enough to be there on your jollys this summer, he plays Es Paradis on 13th August.

FILTHY BOOTS//JULY 12th//JACK BEATS//SKULLDUGGERY//

So last night with Calvertron was a mixed bag, a great crowd down of people who clearly are educated and into the music, however just not enough volume of party goers. It was good fun playing early on with Chris Millward playing the likes of ThunderHeist, Mr Scruff and Riot In Belgium over the first hour....this was then followed up by the stronger techno sounds of Style of Eye and a new Zombie Nation tune.

Heres the latest offering:

Style Of Eye - Big Kazoo (Original Mix)

This haunting tech house tune is one that Chirs put me onto early this week. The track steadily builds at crescendos into a crazy kazoo loop. Long live the Kazoo!!! It sound great on the main rooms system last night!

Next month sees Jack Beats in to deliver there pumped up bassline sound, having seen these guys just a few weeks back at Dollops 5th birthday, expect mind blwoing wonky stuff! They will be fresh from a mini European tour and a slot at Glastonbury the week before!

Heres the sound of Jack Beats in a short mix they did for Fabric ahead of there NYE gig 2008:

Funk Mix Promo

Well its a busy week this week, practicing and promoting for the Filthy Boots night here in Derby. I am this month playing at the 'boots with Chris Millward a DJ I met by accident when I was first thinking of putting on a night in Derby. He promotes a night in Ashbourne, Bridge The Gap, which brings funk, electro and techno to the quaint little farmers town on the edge of the Peak District.

The mix below is going onto the first Bridge The Gap mix CD to promote the night at Derbys Sun Lounge bar, which launches on Saturday June 27th. It is funk and some of the tracks Im playing out alot in my warm up sets at the minute....following this mix will be an electro set from Chris himself and a tech house mix from fellow Bridge The Gap resident, Matt Allen.

dollop 5th Birthday: Diplo

Was a busy night last night, was straight out after work with barely time to get on my glad rags for the night ahead. Headed for a few drinks at a friends house around Kedelston Rd then got a ride to Nottigham for the dollop 5th birthday with Jack Beats & Diplo headlining.

The night was busy, very bust by the time Tomb Crew (some what Nottigham ledgends) where spinning in Room 1. There mix of baltimore style beats with jazz and funk influcences was the highlight of the night for me. In my opinion from then on it was downhill, wether it was that I was tired, or just not quiet feeling the music but I felt abit lost in Room 1. Jack Beats deliveried the bassline fidgety wonky stuff they have helped make become so popular but after the pounding beats of Tomb Crew previoulsy, I headed to Room 2. Here I was greeted by another busy room but with techno blaring out of the world famous Funktion One system. The pounding beats and high end percussion meant this room was in a frenzy as the party continued way into the small hours.

Lots of people rushed back at 3am to see Diplo play the last two hours and he continued in the same vein as Jack Beats with heavy electro bassline sound. From my point of view the music had no where to go and that escillation in the atmosphere kind of peeked. Had to leave at 3.45 though as my friend Rob who was driving was getting tired.

Overall a great night with a diverse and up for it crowd, but the electro music I have loved for so long now is getting stagnent, if producers dont book there ideas up I believe that by the end of '10 the electro bubble may burst.

On a more mellow note, a more indie influenced act, Just a Band, are providing todays track of the day. Just A Band have been great over 08 and 09, with great tracks and remixes alike. There most recent released remix was the excellent Pfunkt - Anna Log (Just a Band Remix). The style is ideal in warm up slots as it often quiet vocal yet remains to have a hard driving beat, not unlike Soulwax productions. Buy there stuff here: Beatport

This is there latest self prodcued track from the To Hell With Gravity EP on Home Work Records, titled with the EPs name. Its heavier than normal J.A.B stuff but still has great Indie undertones to keep me entertained.

Fashion Shows!

Hey, been really busy of late helping to promote the Filthy Boots night and getting ready for a DJ set this Thursday. I am DJing after the Univeristy of Derby Fashion Show, which is a great gig to land. Andy Mc, has asked me to take down some funk grooves and I have be downloading some great funk flavours over the past couple of days, to hopefully give the 3rd year students some great music before they head of into the bars of Derby.

The event is always good as the fashion and clothing on display is always original, with taylor made DJ sets accompanying each show compiled by Andy. Its this Thursday 4th June and is £10 entry, which for whats on display is a steal. For more info visit: http://www.derby.ac.uk/fashionshow
