La Roux...

La Roux, what can you say. Some have tipped her to be the big thing of '09 and some have tipped ex pop idol turned hipster, Little Boots. So far we have only one winner in this race...

With remixes from big players already this year bulstering what in my opinion are great electronic pop songs, she is going intergalactic faster than latest Mars prob! This latest remix I have is from Midfield General, who are well known amongst the dance music community, yet have maybe never reached the dizzy heights there productions deserve.

La Roux - Bulletproof (Midfield General Remix)

With the looping sample of La Rouxs, now instantly recognisable, voice kicking things of, it slowly builds into a warm up DJs wet dream. Rather than being the peak time remix that Skreams, 'In For the Kill', remix became this is an almost progressive yet energy packed track. The splicing and looping of La Rouxs voice over the later introduced pounding bassline, means that this track never gets boring and the huge breakdown around 1.30 from the close, is hands in the air stuff.

Ideal for a few tracks for the main event rocks the place, as it delivers yet doesnt give to much to early!

Ross Noble

Last night I didnt get to see the popular BBC series The Apprentice, as I went to see a well known comedian Ross Noble. My girlfriend gave me the suprise and I thought, 'Cool, I dont know this guy and at £20 a ticket he must be good', how wrong I was. I dont know whether this is because the toilet humour on show is common in my workplace, but I just didnt get it. After the interval I was left wanting more, as it seemed so made up and just unfunny. I prefer comedians who are either clever or observe, and from what I can make out all Ross can do is make crude jokes and talk down about the city he is preforming in. My girlfriend was also unimpressed and we left in the encore, what a shower of shit.

On the plus side, in my quest to dig out heavy bassline fidget house with an old skool feel, for Hygro and RealBlunted on www.djforums.com/forums , I have found some corkers.

First from Mikix the Cat, French/German producer on Trouble & Bass Records, is the track Movin' Around.

The track starts of as a bass heavy sqealcher but soon erupts into a stabbing synth orgy, only for the bass to remerge and send the club goers into a frenzy. The breakdowns throughout with the echoed synths make this an old skool slice of action for the modern fidget house DJ.

Mikix The Cat - Movin' Around

Having played at the best nights in the UK including Room3 at Fabric at the famous 'Kill 'Em All' nights, this guy is becoming ever popular around Europe. See him soon at various dates in mainland Europe, in Holland, France and Germany.

On a different, if less old skool tip, is the well known party antehm Ritaiin, from the Nadastrom boys. They have been producing some great tracks as of late, including the recent remix of Tittsworth - WTF. With an EP on Dave 'Switch' Taylors label Dubsided and another in production this guys are only gonna get bigger and bigger!

Nadastrom - Ritaiin

Ritaiin although now several months old is still a great track starting with a nagging beat. This then breaks down to the most intense break down since Fake Bloods'-Mars. The exploding echoing synth followed by the echoing childrens voices always causes a great reaction. especially to those who are unfamiliar with the track. Heavy panting and old skool drum breaks and to the intensity before dropping to a bassline so phat that my laptop speakers distort. This is one track all fidget/electro DJs for late night madness!

Catch them soon in there native US of A....

Piano Hooks!

Now I know that you either love or loath the sound of the classic piano sample, fellow resident at Filthy Boots, Andy Mcalister loves them, as do I. Yet his girlfriend cant stand them, to the extent that she'll leave the dancefloor!

The sound reminds me of the ledgendary Blend parties where the house was funky and the piano samples where commomplace. Now though with the remergence of the acid/warehouse scene here in the UK, there are a few bangers released with a memorable piano sample!

Notably by (one half of the Bumfunk MC's, of Freestyler fame!) Rico Tubbs, a producer who likes his hooks cathcy and his basslines phat! This track is my favourite by him to date, followed closely by Hip Rave.

Act Yo Age - The Flash (Rico Tubbs Rmx)

The huge piano breakdown and haunting 90's lyrics followed by one of the heaviest bass hooks I have heard this year make this a party starter. The mellow beginning with stabbing synths mean its a great tune to move the party up a notch!

More info can be found on the Finnish producer who has been playing at parties in the UK on a regular basis here: http://www.myspace.com/ricotubbsfunk

Cath him on the 27th June at the Sophbeck Sessions in Leicester.

Friendly Fires - Skeleton Boy (Grum Remix)

'Grum, Grum, Grum', said the chicken to the egg.

Friendly Fires - Skeleton Boy (Grum Remix)

This is the latest remix I have from Leeds based producer Grum, he has recieved rave reviews from BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe and has made a big impact within dance music blog culture. This slice of IndieElectroClash remix action from Grum uses Skeleton Boy, a song from the 2008 released self entitled album Friendly Fires. With remixes of other big acts like local boys, Late Of the Pier and the recent underground record Sound Reaction, Grum is set for big things in the rest of 2009.

Dates :

12th June : Bushido, Middlesborough
26 - 29th June : USA Tour
15th August : Beats of Rage Festival, Preston

Miami Beach Sessions @ Sankeys, Manchester, 30th May

Cedric Gervais is the self procalimed 'Best DJ in the USA' , which I hate. I know DJs are known for having big egos, but please. He is producing some great tracks at the minute and is playing regulary at the biggest clubs in North America, holding down a residency at Pacha Miama.

Ahead of his billing at the forthcoming Miami Beach Session in Manchester this coming Saturday, I thought I would put one of his latest track online.

Its a real emotive tech house monster...

Setting Out My Stall...

This is Jake posting the first thing on my new blog. Over the coming months I aim to put music, art work and nightlife listings that I am digging at the moment. I am currently DJing at a few nights around the East Midlands, such as Filthy Boots @ The Royal, Derby...Bridge The Gap@ The Bridge, Ashbourne....soon to be in the back room at Big Room Drama@The Sun Lounge, Derby.

I am currently enjoying loads of different musical styles along the lines of Funk/Soul, Breakbeat and Electro and look to post the latest tracks I get on this blog for your pleasure...

For a start check out http://www.myspace.com/filthybootsderby for the night I am helping to run in Derby. So far we have hosted Foamo, Drumattic Twins, Andy George and Late Of The Pier (DJ set)...above is the night Andy George smashed it just 1 week after filling in for Annie Mac on Radio 1...this guy is going to be big and I hope to get him back to Filthy Boots on a regular basis next year...phat rave!!!
